SYDNEY (AP) – Australia’s busiest state registered more than 6,000 new COVID-19 cases for the first time on Saturday, adding a gloomy note to the Christmas celebrations.
New South Wales reported 6,288 new infections in the last 24 hours, up 676 from the previous day, the highest number in any state in Australia since the pandemic began.
In the state, the number of COVID-19 patients increased by six to 388 and 52 people were in intensive care.
There was good news: no deaths were reported and the number of people who received at least one dose of vaccine reached 95%.
Victoria, Australia’s second-largest state, reported 2,108 new cases and six deaths on Saturday.
